QR stands for “quick response.”  So, basically a QR code is good for getting people with web-capable devices to a web site, file, or some text information (a quick response). These days, we see them most often used on print marketing pieces to link to a web site.

QR codes work like this:

1. A potential customer sees a QR code in a printed advertisement
2. They scan the QR code with a reader (usually on their phone or tablet)
3. The code takes them to a web page with special promotional material

Where many small businesses get it wrong

Print materials driving traffic to your web site sounds great on paper. But in order to convert QR code visitors into customers, it is important to consider the device that they are using to read the code.

Most people aren’t going to hold your business card or direct mail piece up to a web cam to read the code. But they might use their smart phone! This gives you an opportunity to tell your customer that you care about their specific needs by providing them a mobile optimized web experience.
